Kaleena,

That's a very good point.

I think that's another bad faith issue.

They say abstinence is the only 100% effective method of birth control. Which is just a not-so-cleverly disguised tautology. It's like saying condoms are 100% effective when they don't fail.

I haven't seen numbers, but I suspect abstinence pledges are much more fragile than condoms. And at least a broken condom provides partial STD protection.

Definitely a conversation worth having. And don't forgot the issues with abstinence only education. Abstinence only education delays the first sexual experience by a mere 6 months but the rates of STDs and pregnancy are significantly higher.

I know you asked for your Catholic friends to respond, and I expect you meant your Roman Catholic friends; however, if I may...

I think you have hit on a very important subject. I have worked for the Roman church and still work for a church. As a direct employee of the church, I understand the desire to influence certain behaviors because the church losses credibility should a minister be found behaving in certain ways.

However, if a church runs a business, that is not specifically a church, they often employ people who do not belong to that church and or/do not subscribe to the underlying faith statements of that church. If they are willing to employ such people it seems overreaching to restrict any behavior that does not directly impact them performing their duties. As such it also seems overreaching to try to restrict their access to BC. Frankly, it is none of the church's business.

The legal question of where the line should be drawn? Well, I am certainly in favor of giving all churches less rather than more authority on anything that is not directly their faith specific activities.

Grace,

My opinion on the topic is a whole 'nother blog post. Or series of blog posts. Or small book. Suffice it to say, however, I am adamantly, vehemently for love in all of its manifestations.

I've had female friends since I was very, very young. Some closer than others. Love is always a messy thing when humans are involved. Cross-sex friendships have their own unique challenges. But I've never regretted loving or getting close to anyone.

Because this topic is very personal for me, it would be impossible for a book to cause me to change my viewpoint on it. It would be unfair, however, to say that it simply confirmed my opinion. It challenged me and made me think about it in new ways. It gave me new information. So I would say it informed rather than confirmed my opinion.

I read a little bit of the intro and the beginning chapters. However, I'm a bit skeptical...

so, what's your stance on the topic? after reading the book, has your viewpoint changed or simply confirmed your opinions about cross-sex relationships?
